DK 2012 AT THE TOWER BALLROOM BLACKPOOL

From the 29th November to the 2nd December 2012 the West Wales Academy of Dance (WWAD) took part in the Prestigious and world famous competition DIsco Kid King Queen (DKKQ) at the fabulous Blackpool Tower Ballroom as seen on T.V in the programme “Baby Disco”. The event is well known to be the hardest event in the freestyle dancing world and to get there competitors have to qualify during the year at one of a number of very high standard qualifying rounds throughout the country. Team WWAD arrived at the event with seven of their dancers qualified for the grand finals and around eighteen more dancers there to compete in the supporting events during the weekend which also prove to be of an extremely high standard with large numbers of entries up to eighty per category.
This was the first year that Team WWAD had entered the competition after making the decision earlier in the year to really concentrate on the freestyle circuit and give all the kids the real opportunity to excel in their chosen sport.
All of the dancers from Team WWAD danced exceptional all weekend getting into no less than 18 of the supporting finals from Slow dance, Freestyle dance, Street dance and Pair dances after working their way through the many rounds beforehand and gaining many podium places.
In the qualified grand finals the seven dancers from team WWAD also danced extremely well getting themselves into quarter and semi finals and Ross John from Pembroke Dock became the first ever dancer from West South Wales to make a DKKQ Final. Ross danced out of his skin all weekend and not only did he get a 4th in his solo Slow dance final he then went on to make the very prestigious Freestyle solo grand final and finished a very credible 5th.
Director Melissa Mcphee says that it is just incredible what we have all achieved this year and Myself and Partner Andrew are extremely happy and proud and made our 15 year anniversary of WWAD all that extra special.

Recently the West Wales Academy of Dance (WWAD) have been holding local dance competitions in the Pater Hall Pembroke Dock. These competitions have been held for all members of the WWAD to get the chance and experience of dancing in a competition and also allow the family members/carers to see what they’ve been learning in classes. Also it’s given everyone the opportunity to see our travelling competition children perform and to see how well WWAD are actually doing in the freestyle world as we have current Welsh, British, European and World Champions within the Academy that all danced at the events. Director Melissa Mcphee says that these days are absolutely fantastic in given everyone the opportunity to compete and build their confidence and also very inspirational to see the advanced dancers in full glory. Our next competition is on the 16th December in the Pater Hall and again open to all members of the WWAD

With celebrating our 15th year Anniversary this year we are going all out to make this the best Summer School the WWAD has ever had. There will be loads going on for everyone!!

With guest workshops with Donna Shephard and Fiona Richardson and lots of surprises already booked this really is going to be an amazing week for all!!

The last day of this Summer School is also the same day as our Summer Show “THIS IS WWAD” so will all be incorporated together and there will be a special performance from our Summer School students at the start of the show!
